Guide to Barrel Locks: Types and Applications
Contents
Barrel locks are important in securing cabinets, trucks, lockers, and other storage units. In this guide, we'll explore the structure and function of barrel locks, as well as their types and applications.
What is a Barrel Lock?
A barrel lock, also called a barrel or lock cylinder, is a locking mechanism. It houses the keyway and the internal components that engage or release the lock. When the correct key is used, it aligns the tumblers, allowing the barrel to rotate and unlock the door.
The most common materials for producing these devices include stainless steel, brass, and zinc alloys. These materials are chosen for their durability and resistance to wear. The locking systems can vary based on specific use cases and environments. Whilst barrel locks come in many forms, this guide focuses primarily on those applied in storage units, such as cabinets, trucks, and lockers.
Structure of a Barrel Lock
A typical barrel lock structure consists of:
1. Lock Body: The main housing that encases the internal components.
2. Pins or Discs: Cylindrical components that vary in height or configuration to position correctly when the correct key is used.
3. Keyway: Where the key is inserted to engage the internal components.
The key slots position the inner mechanism by dividing the 90° angle into four parts to trigger the locking or unlocking process. More advanced designs, such as those from REAL Lock, decrease traditional pins and springs, improving sturdiness and security.
Types of Barrel Locks
Now that we've covered the structure, let's explore the types of these locks in detail. Here are two of the most common barrel types available today:
Detained Disc Cylinder:
Detained disc cylinders are one of the most secure lock types available. These locks operate using rotating discs, which provide more combinations and higher security levels. The lock blank is first cut evenly on both sides to a uniform depth. The circular lock cylinder has symmetrical rectangular slots on both sides, with the inner and outer holes forming a tapered angle—larger on the inside and smaller on the outside. These slots hold the springs and brass discs. When the blank key is inserted, its edges push the brass discs on either side back. Once removed, the discs return to their original position through spring force.
REAL Lock specialises in detained disc cylinder designs, offering a system free of springs or pins. This feature makes picking up nearly impossible while ensuring reliability.
- Features:
REAL Lock's detained disc lock has more than 200 million key combinations, granting unmatched security. Our design offers a spring-free and pin-free solution, reducing wear and extending the lifespan of the lock. The key must be turned reverse to re-lock the system and scramble the discs. Using unique key profiles can prohibit others from copying keys easily because only REAL Lock has the mold to produce REAL blank keys. Our detained disk lock features greater resistance to picking and provides more key combinations than lever locks.
Pin Tumbler Lock:
Known for its widespread use, the pin tumbler lock features a set of pins of varying lengths. The structure of all pin tumbler locks generally consists of springs, upper and lower brass pins, and cuts or drilled holes in the key blank. When the key is inserted into the inner cylinder, the lower brass pin pushes the upper brass pin to separate the pins, enabling the lock to rotate and open. When the key is removed, the spring's force pushes the upper brass pin back down, causing the lower brass pin to fall into the inner cylinder, locking the mechanism. In this design, the spring is a crucial component. If the spring loses the effectiveness, the lock becomes non-functional and must be replaced.
This type of system, though common, is more susceptible to picking than detained disc cylinders. The reliance on springs and pins means it can wear out over time. It may also be vulnerable to power tools without anti-drilling reinforcement on the front. However, the structure’s simplicity and effectiveness have made it a mainstream choice.
- Features:
This locking mechanism relies on pins and springs. As the key turns, the pins move into place to open the lock. As mentioned earlier, the lock can malfunction if the spring loses its tension, making maintenance necessary.
Applications of Barrel Locks
Barrels find applications in various storage and security solutions. The most common uses include:
1. Cabinet Locks:
These locks are frequently integrated into the office and household furniture, bringing a dependable solution for drawers, cupboards, and storage cabinets. They safeguard documents, valuables, and personal items, only ensuring restricted access to authorised individuals.
2. Truck Locks (Lorry Locks):
In the transportation industry, barrels are applied in truck doors, trailers, and compartments during transit. Made to resist tampering, they protect cargo during transit. They reduce the risk of theft or unauthorised access.
3. Cam Locks:
These locks are found in cam lock systems, which are widely seen in European mailboxes, lockers, vending machines, and storage units. These locks protect personal or commercial assets.
